Trading XAU/USD on the FxPro platform

Finding the symbol is the easy part; sizing the order and setting the exit before entry is what decides the trade.

Finding XAU/USD in the terminal

XAU/USD is listed under metals, not under forex, in the Market Watch or symbol list. In MT4 and MT5, right-click Market Watch, choose Symbols, and type XAU to filter. In cTrader and FxPro Edge, use the search field in the symbol panel. Add the symbol to your watchlist so it stays visible between sessions.

Check the contract specification before you trade. One standard lot of gold is 100 oz, and one pip is 0.01. The reference price is around 4275.0, so a one-pip move on a 0.10-lot position is a small naira amount while a one-dollar move is a hundred times that. Confirm the lot step and the minimum volume in the specification window, because a size you cannot enter is a plan you cannot execute.

Set the chart to a timeframe you will actually monitor. Gold moves on news and on the US session, and a position sized on a daily chart but watched on a one-minute chart is a position that gets closed by noise. Decide the timeframe before the order, not after.

Sizing the order with our calculators

Size from the risk, not from the margin. Decide the naira amount you are willing to lose on the trade, convert it to USD at your account's rate, and divide by the distance in dollars between your entry and your stop. Our position size calculator does that division for you and returns the lot size. At 1:200, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, and our margin calculator shows the same figure so you can check the free margin left after entry.

Use the pip value calculator to translate the stop distance into money. For gold, one pip is 0.01, so a stop 5.00 away is 500 pips; the pip value calculator turns that into the loss on your chosen lot size. If the number is larger than the risk you set, reduce the lot size, not the stop. The leverage cap is a ceiling on margin, not a permission to size larger.

Run the profit calculator on the target as well. A target that only works before spread, swap and conversion is not a target; it is a hope. The calculator lets you put the costs you expect beside the gross move so the reward-to-risk you are accepting is the one after costs.

Setting the exit with the entry

Place the stop loss and take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, not after it fills. On gold, a fast move can gap past a stop placed minutes later, and an exit set at entry is the only one you can be sure reflects your plan. In MT4 and MT5 the stop and limit fields are on the order window; in cTrader and FxPro Edge they are on the order panel.

Set the stop at the price that proves the idea wrong, not at a round number that feels comfortable. If the stop is further than your risk budget allows, the lot size comes down. If the stop is so close that spread and normal noise will hit it, the trade is too large for the timeframe and should be skipped.

Finally, check the margin after the stop is set. A position that is correctly sized but leaves no free margin will be closed by the platform on a small adverse move, regardless of where your stop sits. Our margin calculator shows the buffer; if it is thin, size down before you click, not after the first stop-out.

Several XAU/USD symbols exist because each one names a different contract, not a different metal

Search the Market Watch list for XAUUSD and you may see more than one row because each row names a separate instrument, not a separate gold price. Platforms label gold as XAU/USD, GOLD, or a suffix variant, and each contract can carry its own size, its own swap terms and its own session handling. Two rows can look identical in the quote column yet settle differently once you hold them. Confirm the exact symbol your broker lists for spot gold before you click, and check the contract specification attached to that row rather than assuming the quote tells the whole story.

The suffix on a gold symbol usually identifies the account type or server the contract belongs to, so the same metal can appear under several names on one platform. A symbol ending in a letter or number is not decoration; it points to a contract with its own specification sheet. Reading that sheet tells you the contract size, the currency the profit is calculated in and when trading opens and closes. If you trade the wrong row by habit, your sizing and your exit levels are being applied to a contract you did not intend to trade, which is a risk you can avoid by checking once.

Open the specification for the gold row you intend to trade and read three things before placing anything: the contract size, the margin currency and the trading hours. Gold trades nearly around the clock on weekdays, but daily maintenance breaks can leave a stop order unable to trigger at the moment you expect. If two rows quote slightly different prices, that difference is a property of the contracts, not a signal to arbitrage. Pick one symbol, record its exact name, and use that same name in every order, note and calculation you keep.

One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces, which is why gold position size is not intuitive

One standard lot of XAU/USD represents 100 troy ounces of gold, so a single lot is a five-figure exposure at current prices rather than a small trade. With the reference price near 4275.0, one lot carries a notional value in the region of 427,500 US dollars. That is the number that makes gold sizing feel different from sizing a currency pair: a 0.10-lot position is 10 ounces, and even that moves real money per pip. Before you touch volume, convert your intended exposure into ounces and check it against the capital you are willing to put behind it.

Because the contract is 100 ounces, the pip value on gold is tied to the ounce count, not to the lot count alone. One pip on XAU/USD is 0.01 in price, so a 0.10-lot position moves roughly one US dollar per pip, and a full lot moves roughly ten. That relationship is fixed by the contract size, which means your risk per pip scales directly with volume. It also means a stop placed 10.00 away, or 1000 pips, on a 0.10-lot position risks about 100 dollars before any cost is added. Work the ounce count first and the lot figure follows.

Leverage does not change the contract size; it only changes the margin you must post to hold it. At 1:200 through the offshore entity, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about 85.50 US dollars in margin, but that margin figure says nothing about how much you can lose. A leveraged position can lose more than the margin committed if the market gaps through your stop. Treat the 1:200 figure as a maximum cap the account allows, not a target to trade at, and size from the loss you can absorb in naira terms rather than from the margin the platform will accept.

Attaching the stop in the order ticket removes the gap between deciding and protecting

Set the stop level inside the order ticket at the moment you submit the entry, so the protection exists from the first second the position is live. Platforms let you attach a stop loss to a market or pending order before it fills, and doing so closes the window where a fast move arrives while you are still typing a second order. Gold can travel a long way in minutes around data releases, and that window is exactly when an unprotected position does the most damage. The stop you decided on before entry is also the one you calculated your size from, which keeps the two consistent.

Deciding the stop after entry invites you to move it, because the position is already live and the loss is already real. Attaching it in the ticket forces the decision while you are still objective: you know the level that invalidates your idea, you know the ounce count, and you know what that combination costs. If the required stop implies a loss larger than your plan allows, the correct response is to reduce the lot size or skip the trade, not to place a nearer stop that the market will likely reach. The ticket is where that arithmetic should be settled.

Once the position is open, treat the attached stop as fixed unless a new, independent reason appears. Moving a stop further away to avoid being taken out converts a planned loss into an unplanned one, and on a 100-ounce contract each pip of extra distance costs real money. If you want to protect profit later, add a separate instruction rather than widening the original. On gold, where a single session can produce large ranges, the stop placed at entry is often the only thing standing between a controlled loss and a margin call.

The swap line is the overnight financing charge and it is not fixed in advance

The swap line on an open gold position is the financing adjustment charged or credited when the position is rolled past the daily cut-off, and it appears as a separate entry from your trading profit or loss. Gold spot positions are financed, so holding one overnight carries a cost or, in some conditions, a small credit. The amount is not a fixed number you can look up once and rely on: it depends on the broker's financing terms, the direction of the position, and the rate environment at the time. Read the swap figure on the instrument specification before you plan to hold.

A position held for minutes or hours may never meet the swap line at all, while a position held for days accumulates it. That makes the swap a cost of time rather than a cost of entry, and it changes the arithmetic of any trade whose thesis needs several sessions to play out. On a 0.10-lot gold position the daily adjustment is small relative to the price movement, but on a full 100-ounce lot it is large enough to matter to the outcome. If your plan involves holding through the week, the swap belongs in the calculation from the start.

Watch for the day of the week when the rollover is applied in multiples, because that is when a short hold can incur more than one day of financing at once. The exact treatment depends on the broker and the instrument, so check the specification rather than assuming. Also note that the swap is denominated in the account currency, so a naira-funded account sees the effect after conversion. If a trade depends on a small edge, an overnight financing charge that runs against you can erase it, which is a reason to prefer shorter holds when the setup does not require more.

Confirming the symbol, size and costs before the first gold order on a Nigerian account

Before your first gold order, confirm three things on the platform: the exact gold symbol you will trade, the contract size attached to it, and the margin the account will reserve for your intended volume. Then fund the account through a local naira bank transfer, a Visa or Mastercard debit card, an e-payment or crypto, and check what the deposit actually credited after any conversion. Funding method affects how quickly you can trade, not the size of the contract, so the specification check comes first and the funding step second. Note the costs as line items you will observe, not as figures to assume.

The regulator question deserves the same check as the symbol. FxPro is licensed by the FCA in the UK, CySEC and the FSCA, and the entity serving Nigeria is FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL. Before depositing, confirm any broker on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators, since offshore licensing and local registration are separate facts. That check does not tell you whether a trade will work, but it tells you who is accountable. Keep the confirmation alongside your account records rather than relying on memory.

Leverage on the account is a cap, not a setting to aim at. The maximum available in Nigeria is up to 1:200 through the offshore entity, and one review cited 1:30 or 1:20 caps, which is conflicting and was not verified at review. Treat any figure you see as the ceiling the account permits and size from the loss you can absorb instead. Gold at 100 ounces per lot is unforgiving of oversized positions, and the disciplined sequence is symbol, then ounces, then stop, then volume, then margin. Do those in order and the first order is a measured one.

Reading the gold contract specification once saves repeated errors on every later trade

Open the contract specification for your gold symbol and read it end to end once, because it contains every number the order ticket will apply on your behalf. The sheet states the contract size in ounces, the minimum volume step, the margin currency and the swap terms, and those four items govern how your order behaves after submission. Traders who skip this step tend to discover the contract size through a loss rather than a document. The specification is the reference you return to whenever a figure on the platform surprises you, and it is more reliable than memory.

The minimum volume step matters as much as the contract size, because it sets the smallest adjustment you can make when reducing risk. If the step is coarse relative to your account, your calculated safe size may not be available, and the honest response is to trade a different instrument or wait rather than round up. Gold at 100 ounces per lot makes that rounding expensive. Check the step before you build a plan around a precise ounce figure, so the plan matches what the platform will actually accept.

Keep your own record of the symbol name, the contract size and the margin reserved for each trade you place, in the same place you record entries and exits. That record turns the specification into something you can audit, and it makes the effect of leverage and financing visible over time rather than only at the moment of a loss. Gold rewards precision in the same way it punishes assumption: the same 100-ounce contract underlies every trade, and the difference between two traders is usually how carefully they read the sheet before the first one.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I find XAU/USD in MT4, MT5 or cTrader?

Open the market watch or symbol list and search for XAUUSD, which is gold against the US dollar. On MT4 and MT5 you may need to right-click the list and show all symbols before it appears. On cTrader, use the symbol search box. FxPro publishes support for MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge, so the route differs by platform.

What does one pip and one lot mean on gold?

One standard lot of gold is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01 in the XAU/USD price. With the reference price near 4275.0, a 0.01 move is one pip. Your naira exposure depends on the lot size and the USD to NGN rate, so convert before sizing. The pip value calculator turns that into a figure you can compare with your risk limit.

How do I size my first gold order without overexposing the account?

Start from the loss you can accept in naira, convert it to USD, then divide by the pip value of the lot size you are considering. That gives the stop distance in pips. At the 1:200 ceiling via the offshore entity, a 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50 margin, but margin is not your risk; the stop is.

Why is my gold margin different from the figure I calculated?

Margin depends on the leverage cap attached to your entity and account setting, the lot size, and the current XAU/USD price. One review cited 1:30 and 1:20 caps, which conflicts with the 1:200 ceiling and was not verified at review. Check the cap on your live account, then rerun the margin calculator.

Should I place my first gold trade on a demo account first?

Yes, place the first order on demo so you can confirm the symbol, the lot size and the stop distance before real money moves. Gold moves in dollars per ounce, so a small price change is a large naira swing at 100 oz per lot. Use the profit calculator on the demo order to see the exposure plainly.
